White Peony Root
Latin Name: Radix Paeoniae Alba
Other Name: Bai Shao, Peony, Chinese Peony
Type: Herb
White peony is a flowering plant whereby its root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for its medicinal properties. Particularly beneficial for women, it is known as a 'blood tonic' to nourish blood and regulate menses.
Based on TCM theory, white peony root is helpful in relieving a hyperactive or 'qi' stagnation in the liver, hence making it useful to relieve abdominal pain and muscular spasms. When used together with other herbs, it is also believed that it has an astringent effect to arrest excessive sweating associated with cold and wind.
Commonly used to enrich 'yin' and pacify liver, white peony is useful in alleviating headache and dizziness, that are associated with hyperactive liver.
