Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in hundreds of biochemical processes in the body, including building bones and teeth, and supporting healthy muscle and nerve function. About 60% of magnesium in the body is found in bones, whereas the remaining are found in muscles, soft tissues and blood.
Low magnesium level in the body may cause stiffness and weakness of muscle, headaches, muscle aches and cramps, and weak bones and teeth. Common food sources include leafy greens (e.g. spinach and kale), fruits (e.g. avocado, banana), nuts and seeds (e.g. sunflower seed and almond), legumes (e.g. black beans and chickpeas) and seafood (e.g. salmon and tuna).
