Tocopherols are major group of vitamin E, existing in four forms: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta.
Among these, alpha-tocopherol is found in the largest amount in our blood and body tissues. It acts as an antioxidant that contributes to several health benefits, such as enhance immune health, promote healthy skin and better blood circulation by reducing the formation of blood clots. It is also being studied for its potential role in the prevention of some types of cancer.
Common food sources include seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables.
Tocopherol deficiency is uncommon, but the signs of deficiency include infertility in both men and women, shortened red blood cells lifespan, and poor muscle function.
