Titanium Dioxide
Type: Excipient
Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring chemical compound that produced when titanium reacts with the oxygen in the air.
It is a tasteless, odourless additive that can be found in wide range of products, including paints, papers, plastics, toothpaste, sunscreen, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products and dietary supplements for its different properties.
Titanium dioxide is a fine, white powder and is a FDA-approved food colorant that acts as a whitener, sometimes also an anti-caking agent to prevent the product from clumping together. Titanium dioxide is also used in tablets and capsule coating to provide opacity to light, preventing products from premature degradation and prolonging their shelf lives. It is generally recognised as safe as it is rather chemically inactive and non-toxic, thus can be used in food and pharmaceuticals without interacting with other ingredients.
